The Outreach committee of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church is holding its 7th annual Freedom School Fundraiser benefitting the “Roddy Roberts School of Rock” at the Old Town Freedom School and the Winston-Salem Freedom Schools organization. This is a free event open to the public, featuring local artists and musicians from the Triad area.

The Roddy Roberts School of Rock started as a cultural enrichment activity for Old Town Freedom School scholars, and has grown to educate, encourage and empower students to learn and grow their musical talents, gain self-esteem, and inspire lifelong leadership skills. Our goal is to raise $7,000 toward continued guitar lessons and cultural enrichment for Freedom School scholars.

The core mission of the Winston-Salem Freedom Schools is to boost student motivation to read, generate more positive attitudes toward learning, increase self-esteem, and to connect the needs of children and families to vital resources within their communities. Rooted in the Mississippi Freedom Summer project of 1964, the CDF Freedom Schools program is a literacy and cultural enrichment program designed to serve children and youth in grades K-12 in communities where quality academic enrichment programming is limited, too expensive, or nonexistent. Access to music, STEM, history and cultural programming are vital to the overall education of a young scholar.

Your contribution opens up a world of possibility for students who would otherwise go without due to cultural and financial barriers beyond their control and is vital to the ongoing mission and vision of the Winston-Salem Freedom Schools.

Join us for an open mic night, in partnership with our friends at Incendiary Brewing, located at 486 N. Patterson Ave, near Bailey Park on Tuesday, April 29, from 4 – 7 p.m., for an evening featuring music and entertainment from local artists across the Triad. Donations in any amount are greatly appreciated, and tip jars will be available to collect gifts. Donations can also be made online at https://stanneswinstonsalem.org/donate/ and click the dropdown menu to select Freedom School. Or mail a check to St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 11437, Winston-Salem, NC  27106, and include in the memo line “for St. Anne’s Freedom School Fundraiser.”

Bring your guitar or other instrument, your voice, or just yourself and enjoy an evening of great music and fellowship for a wonderful cause.
